Descripción
Back of the Book

In the material world, everyone is in fearful consciousness (sada samudvigna-dhiyam), and the only means to make everyone fearless is Krsna consciousness. When Lord Nrsimhadeva appeared, all the devotees became fearless. The devotee's hope of becoming fearless is to chant the holy name of Lord Nrsimhadeva.

Yato yato yami tato nrsimhah

Wherever we go, we must always think of Lord Nrsimhadeva. Thus there will be no fear for the devotee of the Lord who chants the thousand names of the effulgent Lord.

As it is stated in the Srimad Bhagavatam (7.9.5 and 7.9.14) although feerless, the Supreme Lord is also very gentle with His devotee:

"When Lord Nrsimhadeva saw the small boy Prahlada Maharaja prostrated at the soles of His lotus feet, He became most ecstatic in affection toward His devotee. Raising Prahlada, the Lord placed His lotus hand upon the boy's head because His hand is always ready to create fearlessness in all of His devotees."

Introduction

I think that this book containing the one thousand names of Lord Nrsimhadeva, and the Sri Nrsimha-kavaca, which was spoken by Prahlada Maharaja, as found in the Brahmanda Purana, will be welcome by a great many devotees. I say this because I have experienced that a great number of devotees have special attachment for Lord Nrsimhadeva. Why this special attachment is there, even though there are unlimited forms of the Lord, can be understood from the following two verses from the Seventh Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam (7.9.5 and 7.9.14).

The purport of Srila Prabhupada: The necessities of the material world are four- ahara, nidra, bhaya and maithuna (eating, sleeping, defending and mating). In this material world, everyone is in fearful consciousness (sada samudvigna-dhiyam), and the only means to make everyone fearless is Krsna consciousness. When Lord Nrsimhadeva appeared, all the devotees became fearless. The devotee's hope of becoming fearless is to chant the holy name of Lord Nrsimhadeva. Yato yato yami tato nrsimhah: wherever we go, we must always think of Lord Nrsimhadeva. Thus there will be no fear for the devotee of the Lord.

"My Lord Nrsimhadeva, please, therefore, cease your anger now that my father, the great demon Hiranyakasipu, has been killed. Since even saintly persons take pleasure in the killing of a scorpion or a snake, all the worlds have achieved great satisfaction because of the death of this demon. Now they are confident of their happiness, and they will always remember your auspicious incarnation in order to be free from fear."

The purport of Srila Prabhupada: The most important point in this verse is that although saintly persons never desire the killing of any living entity, they take pleasure in the killing of envious living entities like snakes and scorpions. Hiranyakasipu was killed because he was worse than a snake or a scorpion, and therefore everyone was happy. Now there was no need for the Lord to be angry. The devotees can always remember the form of Nrsimhadeva when they are in danger, and therefore the appearance of Nrsimhadeva was not at all inauspicious. The Lord's appearance is always worshipable and auspicious for all sane persons and devotees.

This is the simple truth. When the devotees are put into a dangerous situation, they quickly remember Lord Nrsimhadeva. Once, long ago, I was traveling by train with my wife through Uttar Pradesh in the evening. We had a small compartment with only the two of us. It was just getting dark and the train stopped at a station where many students hopped on. They were commuting from college back to their homes at the next stop. Of course, our coach was reserved but these students were unruly and raucous. When a group saw us through the window they made gestured threateningly and so we locked our compartment door. They boarded the coach and began banging on the door that we should let them in. We didn't and so they began to kick the door. My wife, Narayani devi dasi, began loudly chanting the prayers to Lord Nrsimhadeva as they continued to smash the door and shout. Fortunately, the door was very strong and never gave in but next to be door was a window covered with a weak aluminum sheet for ventilation. Only after a long time did they think to kick that window, as Narayani continued to loudly chant, namaste narasimhaya….With a single kick, the aluminum sheet flew off and a crazed student peered in. He saw me sitting there and Narayani fervently chanting for Lord Nrsimhadeva's protection. After a moment, the students went away and the train pulled into the next station and they got off. They had been violent but after the chanting of the prayers to Lord Nrsimhadeva, they calmed down.

Since that time, I have many times chanted the prayers to Lord Nrsimhadeva in difficult times and from what has always happened, I am convinced that there is great protective power in these mantras. Of course, in this world, there is danger at every step, padam padam yad vipadam, and so there is a lot of opportunity to remember Lord Nrsimhadeva. Many devotees have been afflicted with fatal diseases and I have seen they all have taken shelter of Lord Nrsimhadeva. Lord Nrsimhadeva ki jaya!
